A release process that includes water releases from the river will also be set up later this year with the first new releases expected by early 2017.

Mr Macfarlane said the Government planned to start releasing water before the end of 2017, despite not being satisfied the irrigation water could meet growing needs, including growing demand for irrigation, on existing irrigation systems.

In the meantime, an estimate will be released this week that some 4.3 million litres of water will be released into South East Queensland.
